The conclusion of the prologue...

The thud of footsteps hitting the starboard bow signaled action, but Ulgren held the men back from it. Laroh always made the first move. The battle cries resounded from the deck as the brigands charged. But a blinding light pierced the night, directed into the brigands' eyes, halting their forward motion and backing them up.
Ulgren charged with his men at the brigands, running them over, chasing others back to their ship, and yet others overboard. Another part of the crew raised anchor and a sudden wind found the sails of the ship. The brigand ship, on the other hand, received no wind. Laroh then focused the light he'd created at the main mast of the brigand vessel. It crackled, then smoked, then set ablaze, at which time Laroh ceased the light.
Ulgren and his men stood on the bow, cheering with raised swords at the victory. The ship and crew moved on through the night unharmed, a position not enjoyed by many past ships of the sea.
